2nd World Coffee Conference by ICO

Registrations open for 2nd World Coffee Conference The event, which will bring together more than 1,000 participants in Salvador, will include a Products & Services Exhibition and a technical visit to a coffee farm in western Bahia Registrations have opened for the 2nd World Coffee Conference, which will take place from September 23rd to 25th at the Pestana Bahia Hotel, in Salvador, the capital of the state of Bahia in Brazil. Promoted by the Ministry of Agriculture, in partnership with the International Coffee Organization (ICO), the theme of the event will be “Lessons Emerging from the Crisis: New Paths for the Coffee Sector”, which will be discussed in three sessions: “Lessons Emerging from the Crisis”; “Coffee Policies in a Market Economy”; and “How to Develop a Sustainable Coffee Economy”. Organized by the Association of Farmers and Irrigators of Western Bahia (AIBA), with support from the government of the State of Bahia, this conference is open to all members of the coffee supply chain: growers, roasters, exporters, traders, suppliers of equipment and inputs, representatives of the financial sector, researchers and consultants. The registration fee is US$ 550/person, which entitles the participant to take part in all the plenary sessions and to visit the Products & Services Exhibition, which will be held at the same location as the event. Technical Visit The conference (which will take place on a weekend) will be followed by a meeting of the ICO’s International Coffee Council (from September 26th to 30th), participation in which is restricted to the delegations of member countries. During these days, conference participants may wish to explore Salvador and then, on Friday, September 30th, join the technical visit to the district of Luis Eduardo Magalhães (LEM), near Barreiras – in the cerrado (savanna) of Western Bahia, a region which is gaining increasing recognition because of the production of high quality of the beans and the advanced technology used in the production cycle. Coffee growing in the region is a recent (mid-1990s) development that is based on the implantation of large-scale projects with a high investment in technology. . The fee for the technical visit is US$ 200/person, which covers air travel (Salvador-LEM-Salvador) and lunch at the Agronol Estate, site of the visit. The farm has 8 million coffee trees, planted in 1,500 hectares, with an annual production of around 100,000 bags of fine coffee (of the Catuaí, Catucai and Bourbon varietals). Products & Services Exhibition In parallel with the 2nd World Coffee Conference, a Products & Services Exhibition will be held in the Jorge Amado Hall, near to the auditorium where the conference will take place. With a total area of 758 square meters, the exhibition will consist of 24 stands of 9m2 and 8 stands of 6m2, in addition to two thematic plazas (islands with area of 36m2) . According to Roberto Duran, director of RD Eventos, the official secretariat of the conference and organizer of the exhibition, the fair will bring together public agencies, banks, trade associations, roasters, exporters and suppliers of machinery for farmers and industry. The 2nd World Coffee Conference, chaired by Agriculture Minister Roberto Rodrigues, is expected to attract over 1,000 participants, including delegations from exporting and importing countries, representatives of the private sector, government authorities and the presidents of 10 countries that have been especially invited by the Brazilian government. The event will be opened on September 24th, 2005 by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
