Big Tea and Coffee Experiment…

The Human Cognitive Neuroscience Unit (Division of Psychology, Northumbria University) is embarking on an internet based study assessing the cognitive, mood and health effects of everyday caffeine consumption. The aim of the study is to see if there is any relationship between how much caffeine people normally consume and their mental performance, mood and health. A previous study that looked at this issue in a large sample about 10 years ago found that some aspects of mental performance improved the more tea and coffee participants consumed on a daily basis (Jarvis, 1993)

. There was also some suggestion from the data that this effect was more pronounced in older participants, suggesting a possible neuroprotective effect of caffeine as people get older. Naturally, this is a topic that is of interest to the 85% of the general population who consume significant levels of caffeine from tea and coffee on a daily basis. For this type of study to succeed there is a requirement of about 10,000 respondents. The actual study runs completely over the internet… it takes approximately 12-15 minutes to fill out the questionnaire: www.caffeineresearch.org.uk
