Caffè Culture 2010 – a phenomenal international success
The event also saw a huge increase in international visitors – undoubtedly attracted by the World Barista Championships, which took place for the first time within the UK. After three days of intense competition among fifty-three professional and champion baristas, Michael Philips took the title to become the 2010 World Barista Champion. From the USA, Michael is employed by Intelligentsia Coffee and Tea and this was his second time competing in the event.
Other finalists were (listed in order of place): Raul Rodas (Guatemala); Scottie Callaghan (Australia); Colin Harmon (Ireland); Soren Stiller Markussen (Denmark), and Stefanos Domatiotis (Greece). Thousands of spectators were on site to watch the competition and the live stream web video drew another 200,000-plus viewers.
Caffè Culture also played host to the world finals of the SCAE competitions with the following winners taking the cup in each competition:
Jeroen de Corte (Belgian) – World Coffee in Good Spirits Champion
Hector Gonzalez (Guatemala) – World Cup Tasters Champion
Haruna Mutayama (Japan) – World Latte Art Champion
Aysin Aydogdu (UK) – World Cezve/Ibrik Champion
In addition, this year was the first year Caffè Culture played host to the SCAE’s annual Conference. With a first class line up of international speakers, including Buck Hendrix, Starbucks; Doug Zell, Intelligentsia; David Schomer, Vivace; Kenneth Luciani, Baresso; James Wallman, The Future Laboratory and Lewis Allen, Portland Design, the new format conference has received some very positive feedback ensuring its future home within Caffè Culture.
At its heart, Caffè Culture is an event designed to provide the entire industry with the very best resource possible to allow them to succeed in business. This year was no exception with thousands of products and services specifically designed to meet the needs of the global coffee bar industry on offer. A large number of companies also utilised Caffè Culture as the platform from which to launch new products, including: Franke Coffee Systems, Lincoln and York, MAHLKÖNIG, Speciality Breads, Drury’s, Detpak and Broderick’s.
Caffè Culture 2011 will move back into the National Hall at Olympia and will take place from 18 – 20 May. Exhibitors at the 2010 event were extremely keen to secure their places at the 2011 event following the phenomenal success of this year’s event and, before the show had closed, over 65% of space had been sold . During the show it was announced that Upper Street Events, the organisers’ of Caffè Culture, and the SCAE are to go into partnership to host further events within Europe. The collaboration will see Upper Street Events organise the SCAE’s annual exhibition and conference. As part of the new initiative the event will be re-launched and rebranded, with the first edition taking place from 22 – 24 June 2011 at the MECC in the picturesque city of Maasstrict, Holland.
