Michael Phillips of Intelligentsia in Chicago became the first American winner of the World Barista Championship in late June, at the 11th edition of the competition at the SCAE Event at Caffè Culture in London.

Two-time US Barista Champion Phillips produced a complicated and expertly timed presentation that demonstrated the subtle differences to taste in three coffees resulting from different processing methods. The judges awarded him 706 points.

Second in the 2010 WBC was Raul Rodas of Guatemala, who achieved 691 points, with Australian barista Scottie Callaghan reaching a total of 672.5 points from the judges, to take third place.

The other three finalists were Colin Harmon of Ireland, with 659.5 points in fourth place, Denmark’s Søren Stiler Markussen, whose 644.5 points netted him fifth place and Stefanos Domatiotis of Greece, who was sixth with a score of 632 points.

Over 16,000 people were watching the live feed of the Championships, with hundreds of retail shops around the world supporting the event under the Go Live Streaming Project, the WBC said.

He achieved a total of 344 points, narrowly defeating the UK’s Edmund Buston, who was the runner-up with 340 points.

Marta Piigli, last year’s CIGS winner from Estonia, placed third, with 306 points.

From Australia, Mitchell Faulkner received 300 points from the judges to take fourth place, while Germany’s Boryana Kotorova came fifth with 250 points and Sandór Tóth of Hungary took sixth place in the finals with 222 points.

Guatemala’s Hector Gonzalez becomes the new World Cup Tasters ChampionHector Gonzalez

In another suspense-filled competition, Hector Gonzalez of Guatemala came through to beat the 37 other contestants and prove his supreme coffee tasting expertise, becoming the 2010 World Cup Tasters Champion at the finals during the SCAE Event at Caffè Culture in London in late June.

In a tense final few cups, he defeated Irish runner-up David Walsh in the exacting competition, by achieving a perfect score of eight correctly identified cups in the time of 4:11.

David Walsh achieved six cups in the final, while third place Gyoung Jin of South Korea came third, with five correct identifications, and Greece’s Tasos Moshopoulos achieved three correct identifications.

Following the Championship final, the speciality coffees from all over the world that had been used in the contest were presented to the audience for sampling, this year including a wide range of the some of the best coffees from El Salvador, Thailand, Rwanda, Brazil, Indonesia, Kenya, Bolivia, Colombia, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Mexico and Puerto Rico.
