Rose van Asten wins…

The second edition of the Dutch Cup Tasting Championship took place in mid-September, and this year the event was given both free space and technical support by the Fine Food show. 25 participants from all walks of coffee life participated in the well-organised event.

In the breaks between the qualifying rounds, the semi-finals and the finals, there were educational sessions for the audience, covering the professional side of being a good cup taster and a good barista, all of which were well received by the audience.

The Championship itself turned out to be a real thriller in all rounds, and only small margins decided who would be among the final four. As happens many times in the SCAE’s Cup Tasting Championships, the winner was decided on the last cup lifted from the table.

Rose van Asten became the winner by a tiny margin. In the final, three competitors had seven cups correct out of 8

. In the beginning, Rose was behind, but she won because she had the 8th cup correct and achieved her result in the shortest time.

Rose van Asten should be a familiar name to those who follow coffee competitions. A child psychology student for a number of years, she has also been a barista, and has now focussed completely on coffee. This has taken her twice to producing countries, and won her two Dutch Barista championships, one Latte Art Championship and now a Cup Tasters Championship, and she is not yet 30.

She came eighth in the WBC Championship in Berne in 2006, seventh at the Latte Art Championship in Antwerp last year and 14th at the Tokyo WBC event, and she coached Liesbeth Sliejster who came third in the most recent WBC in Copenhagen.

The Dutch chapter was well represented while helping out in the back room during the Copenhagen Championships, and they proved beyond any doubt that they were good organisers–so good that they had ideas that will be used in next June’s World Championships in Cologne.

After a slow start, a highly skilled and enthusiastic coffee culture is spreading throughout the Netherlands. The Dutch will undoubtedly send a very strong team to Cologne and they will be among the favourites in the SCAE Best Nation Competition.
