The Worldwide Sustainable Coffee Fund…

.. . of the International Coffee Organization in London (ICO), 16 – 19 May 2005 At the upcoming meeting in the Private Sector Consultative Board (PSCB), a response from the coffee industry representatives is expected to the proposal made of the Worldwide Sustainable Coffee Fund and its concept. The coffee industry – lead by NESTLE, KRAFT, SARA-LEE, PROCTER & GABMLE AND TCHIBO – could seize the opportunity to make a decisive step towards sustainability in coffee business. During last meeting of the PSCB in January 2005, the industry representatives were asked to consult internally and revert with their conclusion whether they are willing to contribute to this Coffee Fund. Under this concept, a financial support of US$ 1 per 60-kg bag of green coffee is foreseen. This represents US$-cents 2.0833 (repeat cents) per 1 kg of roasted coffee or US$-cents 0.01736 (repeat cents) for one cup of coffee or Out of 57 cups of coffee sold, equivalent to 475 gram of coffee, the coffee manufacturer would contribute one single US$ cent (repeat 1 cent) With this contribution, rather marginal, the fund could gather US$ 70 million per year and invest half of it in sustainable projects in the coffee producing countries – all countries in development. With the remaining half, the coffee culture in consuming markets would be supported which should result beneficial to the industry and the coffee producing countries as sales volumes can be expected to raise

. Participating in the Coffee Fund would permit the coffee industry to bring transparency into their activities in the producing countries in addition to supporting environmental projects, which would result in a substantial benefit of their own public image. The concept of the Coffee Fund is formally supported by coffee producing countries that sum up 34 % of the world’s total exports (it has to be noted that Brazil and Colombia, totaling 40 % of world’s export, cannot compromise to the Coffee Fund due to their complex political structure). This strong desire of several coffee producing countries for such a neutral, transparent and global fund cannot be neglected.
